The User Requirement Specification (URS) is co-evolved with the client and the industrial design consultant. The URS is the starting point for the next phase i.e., the preliminary schematic phase.  This phase describes the development of engineering solutions to satisfy the requirement of the project.

Schematic Design often produces rough drawings of a site plan, floor plans, elevations, and often illustrative sketches or computer renderings. In-depth Analysis and proper understanding require for both greenfield and brownfield projects. A realistic design that is functional and achievable is a crucial deliverable of this stage. This forms a base for the project.

The process flow for User Requirement Specification is also included in the preliminary design plan. This ensures that the machinery foundation is finalized at this stage. All the utilities, the process piping, etc. are discussed and agreed upon in this phase.

All space requirements need to be finalized in this stage. The space allocation is done based on the need, equipment. A time & motion study helps evolve the space allocation better.

The site infrastructure like road drains, culverts, perimeter protection, rainwater harvesting, security block, etc. are decided in this phase. The site infrastructure is planned based on the requirement and budget.

The design has to be reviewed to check whether the client’s requirements are met. The design has to be examined, keeping in mind the project budget also. This stage helps the client taking an informed decision after understanding the design better.

Criteria vs. Constraints

This helps taking steps to ensure that the project is successful. Design constraints are also dealt with at this stage. The most significant obstacles to any project are Schedule, Cost, and Scope. Any change in one limitation will invariably affect the other two. Keeping these constraints in mind helps increase the odds of completing a project on time within the budget, achieving the project goals.

User Requirements Specifications should be signed by the system owner, key end-users, and Quality. Once approved, the URS is retained according to your organization’s practices for document retention.
