A pre-engineered steel building is preferred over conventional steel building for industrial construction due to its fast construction. Both methods require the same essentials (design, foundation, framing, finishes) but have different processes. Let’s have a look into the comparison between Pre-Engineered steel building and Conventional steel Building structures, which shows the advantages of pre-engineered steel buildings (PEB) over a Conventional steel building.

  1. Quick and affordable design. Typically, PEB will have a faster and inexpensive design and build process. Almost all cases of your engineering, architectural design, and relevant sketches, drawings, and plans include in the price of your steel building. Steel building manufacturers have highly-specialized computer software programs and in-house designers who can quickly and efficiently tailor your building’s design to your needs.PEB is somewhat different from a conventional building, which is designed from scratch, with a sturdy design and detailing work required from an industrial design consultant. Conventional design methods usually take less time and more cost – often costing 30% more than PEBs.
  2. Delivery speed. Once an industrial design consultant and client decide on building design, a steel building can arrive at the job site in about five to seven weeks. While Conventional steel building requires longer delivery times ranging from 20-26 weeks, causing weeks to months of delayed building time.
  3. Smarter and more efficient design. Pre-engineered steel building(PEB) frames are highly-specific to the Industrial design project, without any material waste. They are usually constructed from standard steel plates stocked in masse by the manufacturer. The frame’s geometry is more indicates the internal stress of the steel building, reducing the number of materials used. While a conventional metal building is often framed using mill-produced hot-rolled beams and columns, which are less streamlined due to their all-purpose nature. Also, the extra materials may add extra cost and weight.
  4. Simpler foundations. A lighter steel building requires a lighter foundation as same as a heavier steel building requires a heavier foundation. For the same reason, PEB will also mean a simpler and more basic foundation. But comparatively heavy foundation required for Conventional steel building. 
  5. Improved quality control. A steel building will be designed and fabricated inhouse, with strict levels of quality control at every stage. Conventional steel buildings are almost made on-site, while quality control is less easily monitored and enforced. This affects the persistence and longevity of the steel building.

Conclusion :

Pre-engineered steel building construction isn’t ideal for all project types. However, if the design constraints are the same for your project, pre-engineered buildings offer a lower cost, less waste, low maintenance, durability, flexible frames, and ease of expansion. Pre-engineered steel buildings (PEB) over a Conventional steel building is ideal for commercial and industrial design projects such as gas stations, self-storage facilities, and recreational facilities.
